Smart Water SystemsWaterBee and its impact on the 70% of global water used by agriculture was presented at the 3rd Smart Water System conference held in London on 28-29 April 2014. The demand for water is ever increasing due to growing population, climate change and cost of water. The ageing infrastructure of the water systems coupled with the increasing demand is adding pressure to the water networks. As the water infrastructure age, many problems crop in in terms of water leakage, water contamination, inability to detect water quality and so forth. One of the ways to address these problems is by creating a smart water system. Smart water systems involves the use of smart water meters together with the latest technologies and real time data to better monitor water usage, distribution and problems such as leakage. This also enables to tract the water network and pinpoint problem areas. The 3rd  Annual Smart Water Systems Conference looked into this topic and how smart water is all about coming up with initiatives to manage water more effectively, monitor it all the way along throughout the cycle so that we can better manage and preserve this precious resource. The WaterBee presentation addressed

  • Understanding how to avoid wastage of water in the agricultural industry
  • Use of self-contained and automated scheduling systems to avoid wastage
  • Implementing the use of phone apps and social media to control irrigation

Green Awards 2014WaterBee has been shortlisted in the Irish 2014 Green Awards in The Green Technology Award category. Now entering its sixth year, the Green Awards aim to celebrate excellence in sustainability and to encourage green best practice amongst Ireland’s organisations and individuals. See

The WaterBee Smart Irrigation and Water Management System was chosen because it is a complete, resilient, cost-effective state-of-the-art system that can cut Growers’ and Golf-courses’ water usage by 40%

  • The system’s USP is scientific soil-moisture model that optimises water use and its smart technology that enables ease of use.
    • Currently most growers over-irrigate and depend on their intuition, and most modern irrigation systems just consider weather forecasts.

    • While the Waterbee system
      • Uses a Soil-Moisture Model, wireless sensor network and an open web-enabled architecture for integration with environmental data and farm management systems
      • Optimises water usage and minimizes pollution due to nutrient leaching.
      • Is easy to deploy and run, and facilitates irrigation scheduling tasks,
      • Is highly functional, modular and flexible,
      • Is designed to be robust, reliable and secure
      • Is cost effective to ensure its widespread uptake.
